Steve leads  the firm's lease consulting and valuation groups and has over 20 years of experience in the real estate industry. He has an industry-wide reputation for his work in real estate development transactions in both the private and public sectors as well as for his work in third party due diligence and lease audit review analysis. He is a member of NAREIT, NAIOP and other real estate industry organizations.Previously associated with a public real estate company as Chief Financial Officer, and formerly with Kenneth Leventhal/E & Y, Steve is a graduate of Hofstra University and a Certified Public Accountant in New York and New Jersey

Barry directs the firm's Strategy Group and is a highly regarded business leader in the real estate services industry and a seasoned executive with extensive experience in operations, mergers and acquisitions, strategic planning, and business development. Integrating the experience of over 30 years in business and client services, he has an exceptional background in global markets. Barry is a sought after speaker, addressing numerous industry organizations, corporate boards and government agencies on business operations and real estate strategies.He is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, where he holds the Fellow & Eminent Professional designation. He is an Advisor to the Board of CS Defoe Capital and to the University of Rhode Island College of Business Administration. He has built and operated international platforms for real estate advisory, transaction and management service companies, including Ernst & Young, as Global Director of Real Estate, Grubb & Ellis, as Chief Executive Officer and HelixGlobal, LLP, as co-founder and partner. Barry holds a B.S. in Business Administration and a Masters of Science in Economic Geography from the University of Rhode Island. 

Jahn is in charge of the firm's New York office, leads the firm's Real Estate Financial Services (REFS), IPO Advisory and Hospitality groups and directs the firm's Financial Outsourcing group. He has earned a national reputation for guiding noteworthy transactions in the real estate and financial services industries and has assisted companies through public and private offerings.He advises the firm's public and private clients on debt and equity transactions, real estate acquisitions, property and corporate due diligence and capital markets matters. Formerly with Ernst & Young, Kenneth Leventhal Real Estate Group, he is a member of the NAIOP, NAREIT and the Urban Land Institute. Joe directs the firm's Private Client Tax & Advisory Services Group and has over 20 years of experience as an industry leader in individual taxation matters, estate planning and the administration of estates and trusts. He is a frequent lecturer, has authored numerous articles in professional journals and has chaired various committees in the areas of estate planning and fiduciary income taxes. Joe serves on the boards of Pace University’s Lubin Graduate School of Business Alumni Board and the National Association of Estate Planners and Counselors. James leads the firm's State and Local Tax Group and has over 20 years experience as a nationally recognized state and local tax specialist to the real estate, hospitality and construction industries. He has been a leading consultant on all aspects of state and local taxation including income, franchise and net worth taxes, as well as significant indirect taxes such as sales, use, property and realty transfer. He has extensive experience working with businesses providing transactional advisory and due diligence services for property acquisitions and dispositions. He is a noted speaker, author and has been quoted on several occasions in The Wall Street Journal and other related publications.Most recently with Ernst & Young, where he served as the national leader for real estate state and local tax services, Jim is a member of the NAREIT State and Local Tax Subcommittee, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants. He has a BBA in Accounting from Adelphi University and is a Certified Public Accountant in New York.

Liz directs the firm's Strategy Group and is a seasoned leader in business and real estate. During the past 25 years she has applied her unique background in real estate investment, business strategy, technology, and value enhancement to the delivery of innovative strategy, capital and implementation solutions for public and private organizations and clients. Liz has extensive experience in project development, real estate investment, asset management, and technology development. She is deeply committed to the principal that real estate provides value for shareholders through use and investment and has contributed at executive levels to Grubb & Ellis as Chief Strategy Officer, Glenborough REIT, BGK, Aetna Investors, and HelixGlobal, LLP where she was co-founder and partner.Liz holds a B.A. in Economics from Trinity College and has been involved throughout her career in numerous real estate and women’s organizations, including ULI and AWCRE.

Ingrid directs the firm's Real Estate Financial Services (REFS) group, leads the firm's Financial Outsourcing Group, and has over 18 years of experience, specialized exclusively within the real estate industry. She advises firm real estate clients in key areas including debt and equity transactions, transaction structuring, property and corporate due diligence, real estate development and strategic business planning. She also serves as the firm's Chief Operating Officer. Ingrid is a graduate of the Rutgers University School of Business and a Certified Public Accountant in New Jersey.

Larry leads the firm's Executive Compensation group, directs the firm's Cost Segregation and Tax groups and has achieved industry-wide recognition for his tax expertise in the structuring of corporate and private real estate transactions, including mergers and acquisitions. Formerly Corporate Secretary and Vice President of Taxation at Vornado Realty Trust, he also has extensive experience advising companies on corporate governance and executive compensation matters.Larry is a member of NAREIT and the Real Estate Board of New York. He has a BS in Accounting from Yeshiva University and is a Certified Public Accountant in New York and New Jersey.

Mark leads the firm's Private Client Tax & Advisory Services Group and is a leader in the field of advising multi-generational families regarding tax planning and, more broadly, their long-term wealth preservation.  Prior to joining SMG, Mark was a founder of The Metropolitan Group, where he developed a model for working with families of wealth who own and manage substantial assets, including operating companies, real estate, investments, and foundations. Mark is known for his work in developing governance structures for multi-generational groups to assist in implementing a family’s long-term preservation strategy for their shared assets.Mark previously spent 10 years in the tax practice at Price Waterhouse & Co., where as a Senior Manager, he guided family enterprises in complex inter-generational ownership transitions. Widely quoted in publications, Mark speaks frequently on family wealth issues, the role of philanthropy in multi-generational families, as well as the broader tax implications of long-term wealth preservation.Mark has a BS in Accounting from Pennsylvania State University, was a member of the Family Firm Institute Board of Directors and has served numerous governance roles for family enterprises and is a Certified Public Accountant in New York.

Joseph Strickland Jr. leads the firm's Cost Segregation practice, which includes professionals with degrees in architecture, engineering, and finance, many of whom have “Big 4” experience. With more than 25 years of experience in architectural design and construction management, specializing in investment tax credit and cost segregation studies, Joe has served as designer, project manager, and owner’s representative on a wide variety of projects in the public and private sectors including commercial, industrial, retail, educational, single- and multi-family residential, and land development projects. Most recently, Joe served as National Director of Navigant Consulting, Inc.’s cost segregation practice where he led and was responsible for cost segregation projects in a wide variety of sectors including commercial, retail, residential, gaming, hospitality, and sports sectors.  Previously, he had a leadership role in the regional and national cost segregation practices at Deloitte & Touche, Arthur Andersen, and American Appraisal Associates. Joe holds B.A. and  Masters degrees from Lehigh University, a Masters in Architecture from Carnegie-Mellon University and is a registered architect in both Pennsylvania and Connecticut. 

Scott leads the firm's Tax group and has specialized in real estate taxation for over 20 years. He has extensive experience in all facets of partnership taxation including opportunity funds, structuring partnership roll-ups, disguised sale strategies, Section 704(c) planning, partnership income and debt allocation issues, UBIT planning and related matters.His expertise also includes mortgage and equity REITs including IPO transactions. Scott has a national reputation with respect to the structuring of inbound and outbound investments in real estate, corporate reorganizations and debt restructurings. He has written for several publications and lectured at many seminars.Scott received his BS from the State University of New York at Albany, Juris Doctorate from Benjamin Cardozo School of Law, and his LLM from New York University School of Law.

Harvey directs the firm's Tax group and brings over 30 years of real estate tax experience to the firm. He is nationally recognized for his expertise in sale leaseback transactions including credit net lease financing; tax-free exchanges; and bankruptcy, workouts and debt financing transactions. Berenson recently was a leader of the Ernst & Young National Tax Consulting Department where he specialized in leasing and structured finance transactions.Previously, he was a Tax Partner at the New York law firm of Berlack, Israels & Liberman where his practice specialization included real estate equity and debt restructuring, tax-free exchanges and real estate partnership matters.Harvey has a BA from Yale, an LLB from Harvard Law School and an LLM from New York University.

Philip directs the firm's Tax Group and has over 25 years of experience in the real estate and financial service industries serving leading US and international clients.  His areas of expertise include the taxation of real estate operations and transactions, financial services companies and private equity investment partnerships. He has also played a leadership role in the formulation of tax strategies for private equity and real estate funds involved in corporate reorganizations, debt restructuring, and merger and acquisition transactions.  Most recently, Phillip served as Chief Financial Officer/Tax Director of a privately held real estate development and investment firm.  Prior to that he was the lead Tax Partner in the Financial Services Industry Group at Deloitte & Touche’s New York office where he specialized in the real estate, securities and banking industries working with public companies, buyout/opportunity funds, financial instruments, and others.  Phillip holds a BBA degree in Accounting as well as a Masters in Taxation Degree from Pace University. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Association of Real Estate Companies and is a Certified Public Accountant in New York.

Sharon directs the firm's Private Client Tax and Advisory Services group and has more than 25 years experience as a lawyer, including 10 years in the estate planning and estate tax, gift tax, and generation-skipping transfer tax compliance areas. Previously, she was a Managing Director in the Estates and Trusts Group of RSM McGladrey and prior to that was a Director in the Estates and Trusts Group at American Express Tax and Business Services. Sharon has written extensively on these subjects in many professional publications.She has a BS from the State University of New York - Buffalo and her Juris Doctorate from SUNY Buffalo School of Law.

Jeff directs the firm's Lease Consulting group and has over 15 years of experience in accounting, focused almost exclusively in real estate and lease analysis for nearly 10 years. He has worked on numerous engagements for Fortune 500 companies regarding lease analysis and interpretation of lease language. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New Jersey State Society of Public Accountants. Jeff has a BS in Business Administration from New York State University at New Paltz and is a Certified Public Accountant in New York and New Jersey.

Harvey directs the firm's Tax group and has more than 30 years experience in the real estate industry, specializing in the taxation of real estate partnerships, opportunity funds and REITs. Previously, he was a Tax Principal in Ernst & Young’s New York Real Estate Practice, serving public and private REITs and opportunity fund clients, investing both domestically and internationally.Prior, Harvey served as Director of Taxation for Arlen Realty & Development Corporation, a $2 Billion NYSE real estate company, which developed, owned and operated a diverse portfolio of real estate holdings, including office buildings, shopping centers, residential properties and condominiums, owned through corporate, partnership and joint venture structures. He was also General Partner of a real estate investment group which formed limited partnerships to acquire investment properties and secure financing for acquisitions. Other areas of experience include UBTI, financial instruments and reporting for foreign investments and investors.Harvey received his BBA in Accounting and MBA in Taxation from Baruch College, City University of New York and is a Certified Public Accountant in New York.

Don directs the firm's Tax group and has extensive in-depth experience in real estate transactions, securitizations, Opportunity Funds, IPOs, and debt/equity offerings. He is a nationally recognized leader in the real estate tax area, the co-author of the Real Estate Investment Trusts Handbook, a frequent writer and lecturer on REIT and partnership tax issues, and has authored numerous articles for various real estate and tax publications.Previously, he was Director of Real Estate Services with KPMG. Prior to that, he held leadership positions in the real estate groups of nationally recognized law firms. Don is a member of the New York, New Jersey and the American Bar Associations, the New Jersey and New York Bar Associations and the New Jersey and New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.He has a Juris Doctorate from Rutgers Law School, a master of law degree in Taxation from New York University School of Law and is a Certified Public Accountant in New York.

Jason directs the firm's Real Estate Financial Services (REFS) group. Since joining the firm in April 1999, he has worked in several areas of the firm, including Lease Consulting where he specialized in performing financial due diligence work on a broad spectrum of asset types at a corporate level.  He has assisted public companies, banks, and large private equity groups in their acquisition of assets in excess of $15 billion.  Prior to joining SMG Jason worked in the Property Accounting Groups of Tishman Speyer Properties and Insignia/ESG. He has a BA in Accounting from the University of Scranton, is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts and a Certified Public Accountant in New York

Deborah directs the firm's Hospitality Services group and has more than 15 years of investment industry experience. Her investment banking experience ranges from initial public offerings, secondary offerings and private financings to M&A and advisory services to market feasibility studies, appraisals and operational analyses for over fifty real estate projects. Previously, Deborah was Director at Horwath Horizon, a real estate consulting firm providing financial services for the hospitality industry.Prior to that, she was a Senior Equity Research Analyst at Salomon Smith Barney, Dain Rauscher Wessels and ABN Amro.; and a Senior Consultant in the Real Estate Services Group at Arthur Andersen & Co. Deborah has a BS and MS from Cornell University and has served as an adjunct professor at New York University.

Charles directs the firm's Private Client Tax & Advisory Services group and has over 23 years of experience in trust, estate and individual tax planning. He has advised owners of closely held businesses, family offices, and high net worth individuals in minimizing their tax liabilities while developing strategies to achieve their business and personal objectives. Charles comes to SMG from a regional CPA firm, where he held a management position developing and implementing estate and financial planning strategies; overseeing estate, fiduciary, individual, gift, foundation and partnership tax compliance; performing tax research; chairing its Trusts & Estates committee; and lecturing at continuing education classes.Prior to that, Charles was associated with the law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges in its Trusts and Estates department. He is a member of the Connecticut Bar, has a BBA from Baruch College and a Juris Doctorate from New York Law School.

Mark directs the firm's Private Client Tax & Advisory Services group and has more than 22 years of federal and state tax experience. Previously, he was Tax Director at J.H. Cohn in New York where he was responsible for a wide range of federal, state and international tax issues, including the review of individual, partnership, corporate, fiduciary, foundation, and pension tax returns.Prior to that he was Director of Taxation at Lazar Levine & Felix where he was responsible for, among other things, reviewing tax returns and representing clients under federal and state audits; and Tax Director of Berdon, LLP. Mark also held management positions at Deloitte, Haskins & Sells and U.S. Trust Company of N.Y. He is a member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, New York State Bar Association and American Bar Association.He has a BS in Accounting from the State University of New York at Buffalo, a Juris Doctorate from New York Law School and is a Certified Public Accountant in New York.

Len directs the firm's Strategic Advisory Services group and brings significant experience in structuring and negotiating transactions, capital market activities and joint venture relationships to our industry-leading group.  Previously, he was with The Gale Company where he was Executive Vice President in charge of the firm’s investment platform, strategic growth and organizational structure. Prior to that, Len was Senior Vice president of a national real estate investment firm where he focused on raising equity capital, structuring transactions, and maximizing the tax efficiency of investments.As President of a mergers and acquisitions firm, he was responsible for arranging, structuring and negotiating the sale of closely held companies. Len started his career at a big eight public accounting firm specializing in the tax consequences of real estate investments and transactions.He has a BA from Binghamton University, a Juris Doctorate from Syracuse University College of Law and an LLM in Taxation from the Graduate Division of New York University Law School. Len is a Certified Public Accountant in New York and a member of the New York Bar.

Ken directs the firm's Tax group and has over 12 years of public accounting experience, focused exclusively on the real estate industry for the past 7 years.  During this time his responsibilities included auditing, tax consulting and financial due diligence and advisory services for private real estate companies and real estate funds. Ken has a BS and MS in Accounting from Rutgers University, is an active member of both the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and is a Certified Public Accountant in New Jersey.

Anthony directs the firm's Executive Compensation group and has over 15 years of experience in real estate consulting. Previously, he was with Ernst & Young’s Real Estate Advisory Services where he played a senior role in conducting financial audits and tax basis reviews for both public and private real estate entities, including REITs, owners, developers, and pension funds; performed and supervised due diligence in connection with the purchase of public companies; supervised on an IPO and secondary offerings for a REIT with assets of over $1.5 billion; and supervised due diligence procedures related to over $2.5 billion in performing and non-performing commercial loans.Anthony has a BA from Bernard M. Baruch College of the City University of New York and is a Certified Public Accountant in New York.

Art directs the firm's Tax group and has over 25 years of public accounting experience involving small businesses, restaurants, real estate developers and home builders. He is a member of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.Art has a BS in Accounting from Lehigh University and is a Certified Public Accountant in New Jersey.

Andrew directs the firm's Real Estate Financial Services (REFS) group and has over 16 years of real estate experience including budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling and due diligence. He has worked on many asset types including office, retail, residential, and development projects. Previously, Andrew was with Chelsea Property Group, a publicly traded REIT (which has since merged with Simon Property Group) as Director of Financial Analysis acting as the liaison between the finance and acquisitions departments in the financial due diligence of many retail assets.  During this time he was instrumental in their IPO, establishing their budgeting and forecasting departments and related systems and he played an active role in their debt and equity financing activity in the public markets. Andrew has a BA in Accounting from Queens College of the City University of New York.
